Plickers lets you poll your class for free, without the need for student devices. Just give each student a card (a “paper clicker”), and use your iPhone to scan them to do instant checks-for-understanding, exit tickets, and impromptu polls. Best of all, your data is automatically saved, student-by-student, at plickers.com.

I’ll start by simply quoting the website: “Plickers is a powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices.” One of the teachers I work with described it as “tech without tech.” Plickers is a bit hard to explain so honestly it’s better for you to go to their website and watch a video to figure it out. However, I’m going to do my best to explain. Teachers sign up for an account and then print of “codes” for each of their kids. These codes are…
Formative Assessment in a snap! This tool is awesome for the teacher who doesn’t have a classroom set of devices!
No more screaming out answers during a lecture. Students just turn their card where their selected answer points towards the top. Your device does the rest. Their answers go in and populate immediately on the teacher’s device screen. Use Plickers for quick checks for understanding to know whether your students are understanding big concepts and mastering key skills.
Plickers is a great app for teachers who don’t have access to a full class set of iPads. Teachers print out a set of cards. On each numbered card, there is a graphic that resembles a QR code. The teacher asks a question and the students turn their card so that their answer choice is at the top of the graphic. Holding it up for the teacher to scan, the teacher opens the Plickers app and “scans” the cards. Since the cards are assigned by number, answers populate on the teacher’s device. This could be used in Multiple Choice and True/False type questioning. Additionally, it adds a technology component where it previously looked hopeless.
1 device in the teacher’s hands, real-time data from responses, Fast, easy setup and use. Great for teachers who are new at adding technology into their instruction. Student Participation and Data Tracking. Student could use the same card all year.
Cards must be printed and laminated to get plenty of use, however you can always print a new card for free.
Amazing app! Slight learning curve but highly recommend to all teachers! It is an easy way integrate technology into the classroom. It also allows teachers to reflect on their pedagogical practice based on the data.
I love this tool. This is great for those who cannot afford to purchase a classroom response system. It is very easy to use and only requires sign up, a smart phone/handheld device, copier to print plicker codes, and paper to print them on.
Pros: You get quick data from your students to find out what they know and don’t know. Easy to use and easy set up. FREE!!
Cons: You don’t get as many results as you would with a paid learning system and you are limited to multiple choice questions.
I would definitely recommend this. I will be training K-12th grade student teachers in a few weeks and this is one tool we will be showcasing.
