YouTube is a duel edged sword for the teacher in my opinion. The thing that makes it incredibly valuable is when you use it to show your students specific videos which have been made available there (admittedly, some of them without the permission of the copyright holders). Personally, I have used it to show my students clips from the Original Twilight Zone which are particularly provocative (i.e. the reveal scene from Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder and the cookbook scene from To Serve Man). These can be used as springboards for discussions about social studies topics and to get the kids thinking in brand new directions. However, I not recommend plopping the kids down in the computer room and allowing them to use YouTube for "research." Inevitably, you'll waste your time running around stopping them from watching music videos and other time wasters.

I use YouTube to show entire or parts of educational videos to my class. For example, YouTube has all the SchoolHouse Rock videos that I use to introduce the parts of speech in my writing class. (Remember, "Conjunction Junction"?!) YouTube is also great if you just want to show just a part of a movie. For example, I can show the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet from 2-3 different versions of the movie to compare how different directors interpret the scene. Finally, YouTube is a good place for students to showcase their work, ie a movie project. It is free to upload videos to YouTube.

YouTube has a huge array of videos, though you have to be careful to watch the entire video before playing it to the class to make sure there is nothing undesirable. You can bookmark the videos you use and keep them in a folder. Students can also post videos that they create at home or at school. In addition to educational videos, I use it for song with lyrics in my foreign language class or play a song they like as a bonus for good behavior.

There must be a YouTube video for almost any subject. I use YouTube in a couple of different ways. First, it's a great source for short videos for flipped lessons. I've used videos on topics as diverse as WWI poetry and reference page citations. It can take some time to wade through videos on a topic, but there is almost always something that fits the topic I'm looking for. YouTube videos work well with Prezis and are easy to embed into Edmodo. Students also find it very useful for bringing in videos they've created for class. I remember years ago having to deal with different formats and students' DVDs and flash drives. Now a student only has to log into the computer attached to my Smartboard and he or she can present her video to the class without a glitch.
