Ko’s Journey

Description

Ko’s Journey began in an amazing region of the Andes called the Cordillera Hauyuash. The original math game design was written by a public school math teacher amidst 20,000 feet peaks. Ko, as it was then called, ultimately became a semester-long classroom math game played with stone totems on hand-painted deer hides.

Five years later, with students still recalling how they had learned the Cartesian Coordinate system from Luna of the Night Sky, the deeper understanding of teaching math through story was realized. The math teacher then met a business woman who shared his vision of bringing Ko to life. Together, they formed a development team and, in less than one year, introduced Ko’s Journey to the internet world for all students to experience the learning adventure.

As a math teacher, I used Ko’s Journey in my classroom to engage students with a story based problem. The game focuses on Ko, a girl who gets separated from her kin. The students come across various situations and have to use math to help Ko travel back to her family.

Once a week for a semester, my students would log into the game. It was by far their favorite day of the week. Ko’s Journey focuses on proportions, but many other CCSS standards are covered through out the journey. I particular liked that my students practiced adding fractions with unlike denominators!
