Pinoccio

Description

Build wireless, web-enabled projects in minutes.

Pinoccio is a complete ecosystem for the Internet of Things.

When we say “complete ecosystem” we mean that it is both hardware and software, built together with the goal of helping you create a web-enabled DIY project as quickly and as easily as possible. On the hardware side, Pinoccio is a wireless, web-ready microcontroller with WiFi, LiPo battery, and built-in radio. It’s also an API to get your board talking to the Web right out of the box.

Pinoccio solves a lot of problems left unsolved by existing DIY hardware platforms. With platforms like Arduino, it’s tough to power a device for a significant amount of time without cables or cords . It’s even more difficult to get hardware talking to the Web (unless you are deeply technical and have a couple weeks of time on your hands). We found that we wanted most of our projects to be web-enabled, it seems inevitable. So, we built Pinoccio to make this super easy. Within minutes of taking Pinoccio out of the box for the first time, the board is talking to the Web, sending and receiving data.

Pinoccio is perfectly suited for mesh networking — from remote sensor networks for field biology research, to choreographed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms. Pinoccio is also the perfect compliment to 3D printing. Where 3D printing typically produces a “dumb” piece of plastic, combining an object with Pinoccio gives it computational power and internet connectivity — in other words, the “Internet of Things.”

Starter Kit $197 A Field Scout and a Lead Scout: Your first troop, ready to go exploring! Just follow our super-quick setup process to give these Scouts names and a WiFi connection, and you have your own Internet of Things in five minutes.
Lead Scout $138 Check in with your Scouts remotely: Just one Lead Scout (a Field Scout with a WiFi backpack) provides your whole troop with Internet connectivity. Interact with them from our online HQ, or build your own utility!
Field Scout $59 The Arduino-compatible atomic unit of Pinoccio: Every Field Scout can talk to any other Field Scout via radio (up to about 100m away). The built-in temperature sensor and RGB LED are perfect for starter projects.
WiFi Backpack $79 Turn any Field Scout into a Lead Scout: This little backpack enables you to unite any number of individual boards into a troop (mesh network).
Prototype Backpack $6 Get building with external sensors and displays! Plug them in or solder them on to create swappable hardware interfaces.
Backpack Headers $5 Time to get messy! Create jumper-friendly extensions, and experiment without messing up your Scouts. Comes with 2 headers as a set.
LiPo Battery (550mAh) $5 Keep one topped up at home while the others are out on adventures. A truly wireless system doesn't want to stay plugged in, and an extra battery gives you maximum uptime. This battery has a 1C rating, if you care about that type of thing.
