Socrative is a free online quiz and student response tool that tracks student responses for easy grade reporting. It allows you to use your pre-made quizzes to assess student learning and to create exit tickets and quick questions during class. Socrative also has a competitive class game where students can compete in groups for the correct answer. There are teacher and student apps for this tool.
Kahoot is a free game-like tool for quizzing your students as a pre-assessment or a formative assessment. Students compete with each other to enter the quickly correct answer to each question that you have created in advance. Kahoot can be a really fun tool to use for review of any information.
Poll Everywhere is a basic polling tool that allows teachers to ask multiple choice and open-ended questions to students. Students can also mark their answers on a picture (a map, for example). It is quick to use and you can project results as a graph, word cloud or even allow participants to vote on the best of their peers' responses. This visual component of the results can be used as a launching point for class discussion. Free version does not allow you to track individual student responses by name.
Pear Deck is an interactive slideshow program that helps students be actively engaged as teachers deliver content. It gives teachers formative assessment data as they go through each lesson so they can adjust their lesson as they go to meet student needs. In the paid version, there is an option to send the finished presentation to students via Google Classroom. The free version is still useful, but limited.
Formative is a free online assignment tool that allows you to create quick questions for students such as an exit ticket or longer assignments for students to complete. One of the best features of this tool is that teachers can upload any picture and students can respond by drawing on the picture, which makes it ideal for graphing problems in math or writing on a map or art piece for social studies or art. Students can also upload pictures of their work to submit. The grading shows all students answer for one question in screen and once graded, the grades can be exported to a spreadsheet.
Quizlet is a free tool that gives students opportunities to work on vocabulary mastery through games, flashcards and quizzes. There is a paid version for teachers which provides more data on student performance.
