Edmodo is one of the most popular web tools in education right now. It is very useful for classroom management. Windy Byrd uses it and will be giving a lesson either today or later this summer on how she uses Edmodo in her classroom.
This is another classroom management tool. Some educators prefer it to Edmodo, but I do not know anyone who has used it. Reviewers said that it provided more ways for organizing than Edmodo.
Screencast-O-Matic is a very useful tool for creating online lessons and is quite easy to use. Windy Byrd uses this extensively and suggests that anyone who is doing a project in the computer lab may want to create a screencast to set up the requirements of the project.
Educreations is another tool for creating video lessons. Although it can be used via the web with a PC, it is most easily used with an iPad for creating lessons. Teachers can organize their lessons into different classes.
Jing is another very useful tool for short screencasts and screenshots. I have used it to put demonstrations of how to use the library computer catalog on the JH library page.
TASA (Texas Association of School Administrators) has joined iTunes U, and as of June 1, 18 Texas high school courses are slated to be available through this resource. Of course, it is only available on the Apple platform.
Khan Academy has over 4,000 videos covering K-12 math, many science topics, and some areas in history and other subjects. Students can see their progress and earn badges for their success. Teachers can track the progress of their students.
Most of the content on TED is more appropriate for high school, but it has excellent 20 minute videos by experts that would be great for introducing a topic.
This spin-off of TED was created specifically for educators and actually has flipped lessons created by expert teachers, and provides a way for teachers to revise these lessons for their own use. Videos from YouTube are involved, so there may be some issues involved in viewing them at school.
Quizlet is a popular tool that provides online learning tools, especially the creation of customizable sets of flashcards and games for studying vocabulary.
Remind 101 is a tool for communicating with students and parents. Those who sign up can receive reminders about upcoming assignments, tests, etc. Phone numbers are kept private.
instaGrok is an educational search engine that collects and displays information in a useful graphical format that shows relationships among the topics, categorizes the results, and lets the user adjust the scale of difficulty of the information.
Mural.ly allows users to drag all types of images, videos, and other information onto an expanding page, and it allows users to collaborate with others, and turn the page into a presentation.
Poll Everywhere is another very popular web tool, used to get instant feedback. Many flipped classrooms use it, and not just between teachers and students, but also between students.
Google Docs provides word-processing, plus a way to share and collaborate on documents.
Wikispaces is widely used among educators as a place to store, share, and collaborate. Wikis are easy to create and use.
