Number Pieces, by the Math Learning Center

Description

Number Pieces helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students use the number pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, regroup, add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Note: Number Pieces Basic, a simplified version of Number Pieces, is also available in the App Store. Number Pieces Basic is designed for primary students. It has fewer features, putting greater focus on place value, counting, addition, and subtraction.

FEATURES

  • Add and manipulate pieces (ones, tens, and hundreds).
  • Join pieces in groups of ten or break them apart (e.g., 10 ones into 1 ten and vice versa).
  • Use the expanding edge piece like a measuring tape to show the dimensions of arrays created with the pieces.
  • Choose from three different colors to clearly identify groups or pieces.
  • Move, rotate, and duplicate pieces individually or as a group.
  • Use the drawing tools to label representations and show understanding.
  • Write equations and expressions with the text tool.
  • Zoom and scroll to work with larger collections of pieces.

The Math Learning Center is a non-profit organization that creates curriculum (Bridges) that align with Common Core State Standards to enhance the learning structure for students in Mathematics. The company stems from the National Science Foundation, with publishing that lends to teachers/students and allows the use of supplemental materials to enhance the learning experience while in the classroom, or while at home with their materials accessible online.

What I like most about the website is that you do not have to buy the curriculum just to be able to use the great materials/resources that MLC offers. The best thing is that there is a free apps section where I found some very cool and useful products that are accessible online, or that you can download for free on an iPad. One app is called Number Pieces, where the student can use manipulatives to help them count, make arrays, create shapes, etc. I definitely will be using this resource in my classroom. Plus the best thing, it’s free and accessible outside the classroom!
