I think it is a great tool for education.
This tool can be used for a flipped classroom to be watched by students the night before. It can also be used for homework help or review.
I use Khan Academy to reinforce lessons taught in the classroom. As a special education teacher, my students and I watch the videos together and discuss the lessons as we go along. It’s like having a co-teacher in the classroom with the option of stopping and starting a lesson as we need. The videos are excellent examples of visual aids to accommodate learning. I was happy to see that they recently added math lessons for lower grades. Excellent resource for a flipped classroom.
My son loves Khan Academy, and I do too. It’s great because he can learn about things now that he would have to wait another 2-3 years to learn in school.
One thing that struck me the most on this website was their main mission to the world which is a free world-class education for anyone anywhere. This tool really wants to empower everyone through education without asking anything in return.
As you go on with the website, you can register free of charge. It does not matter who or where you are or what status you have in life as long as your intention is to learn. Once you registered, you can now fully check on the website with almost over 3,300 videos to choose from their website's library depending on your choice of subjects that ranges from K-12 math,science topics which includes the field of biology, chemistry, and physics, and even reaches into the humanities with playlists on finance and history. Each video is very understandable and it is approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer. Isn't that a perfect for everyone? It's priceless!I will recommend this to my colleagues.
Provides a resource for students and teachers on several education topics. A teacher could use the various videos for capturing students' attention, clarifying a concept, or introducing a new concept. In addition to watching the video, comments can be posted about the video or topic being discussed. An individual is able to practice the various concepts. The activities can be shared on Facebook and Twitter.
While Khan Academy doesn't yet offer literature topics, they do have a great selection of art history videos that I've used in conjunction with my literature units. I place links to a video on Edmodo and assign the video as homework for students. The next day in class, we discuss the video and I lead students in making connections to literature. While this isn't a fully flipped classroom model, it's a very time-effective way to add interesting content to the class, and fulfill Common Core standards of integrating art into the ELA curriculum.
