Audacity is an open sourced cross platform program that allows you to record and edit audio. There is a definite learning curve, but it has a lot of powerful features for creating audio tracks.
Camstudio is a free open sourced video editing and screen casting program largely used for Windows. It has a difficult user interface and may interfere with some district firewalls.
Snagit is a cross platform tool from Techsmith, but is especially valuable to use with Chrome for screen capturing. Together with the snagit extension and app you can use it in Chrome for screen casting.
Screencast-o-matic is an online tool for screen casting. It can be downloaded to PCs also. The website shows several examples of student work to give you ideas on the uses of screen casting with students.
Green Screen is an inexpensive iOS app for taking videos in front of a green screen. You can then import other pictures and edit videos in iMovie.
