The World’s Worst Pet Vocabulary App is an excellent resource for teaching Tier Two and domain specific vocabulary to students in grades 3-8. I also feel the app could extend beyond these grade levels. There are different activities designed to keep students engaged in vocabulary instruction including context clues, synonyms/antonyms, grouping/categorizing, etc. My favorite activity required the user to select the word that best fit with a specific book title. This not only helped with vocabulary acquisition; it also fostered critical thinking. I am very pleased that there is a section dedicated to parents and teachers that explains the research and importance of acquiring Tier Two and domain specific vocabulary in the CCLS. Different vocabulary sets focus on science and social studies topics that foster cross-curricular instruction. Finally, the World’s Worst Pet uses expository and narrative prompts that require students to apply their acquired vocabulary to their writing. I am extremely impressed with this app and would highly recommend it to teachers and parents alike!
