Blender is a free and open source tool for 3D modelling, animation, visual effects, video editing and more. While the learning curve is a bit steep, after getting used to Blender conventions, you will be astonished with the capabilities and power of the software.

You can use Blender for almost anything from 3D modelling to animation, video editing to visual effects, game development and more. With the help of official and community supported plug-ins, its capabilities expand. Blender, out of the box, supports many industry standard formats, imports and exports to and from many widely used 3D and video/VFX tools.

It is also used by Blender Institute to produce Open Films, where users can follow the development and production while they can download, modify and distribute production assets. These projects are important as they are a great way to showcase what Blender can do, as well as acting as a real life testing and development environment for new and existing features.
